O'Pry family uses no-kill animal shelter to overcome loved one's death

This weekend marks 17 years since Kristi O'Pry disappeared. She was last seen with her boyfriend's friend, Eric Mickelson on July 19, 1996.

"Not finding her remains has haunted our family in many ways," said Amy O'Pry Massey.

For 11 years, her family searched for her until Mickelson finally confessed to her brutal murder. He is now on death row.

One of Kristi's sisters has taken this weekend to remember her and also reflect on how opening a no-kill rescue animal shelter has helped her overcome this tragedy.

A few months after Kristi's killer confessed on July 13, 2007, Kristi's mother, Janet Anderson Dodson, and sister, Amy O'Pry Massey, opened Dogtired Ranch Small Dog Rescue and Shelter, Inc.

Kristi was an animal lover and they opened it in her honor.

"Kristi loved all animals but she especially loved dogs," said Amy O'Pry Massey.? "Anytime she saw one on the side of the road, or in need, she always wanted to help it and this is long before we had the rescue. "

Now nearly six years later, they've been able to save more than a 1,100 dogs from being euthanized.

"We will never forget what he did to our family, ?however we can make a difference and we are everyday through Dogtired Ranch," said O'Pry Massey.

The shelter is located in Mena, AR. There, Massey's mother keeps dozens of small dogs at a time. Both work together to rescue dogs from area animal shelters, spays and neuters them, gets them their vaccinations, and then advertises them online.
