Men's baseball wraps up training camp

WATERLOO, Ont. (August 27, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's baseball team wrapped up its five day training camp with an intersquad game on Sunday afternoon at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener. The game was a highly competitive and spirited affair as the coaching staff used it as a final evaluation before selecting the team that will compete for an OUA Championship.

Team Purple edged out Team Gold by an 8-7 score as players on both teams worked hard to earn a spot on the team. Team Purple was lead by 1B Andrew Czuchnicki and RF Alex Kupchak who each had a hit and 2 RBI. 1B Ian Filion, C Riley Robinson, C Ryan Belz and 2B Jeff Slasor also had hits. Veteran pitchers Brett van Pelt, Adam McBride and Greg Greenberg each worked a scoreless inning a piece for the winners. ?

Team Gold was led by 2011 OUA Rookie of the Year, CF Jon Brouse as Brouse was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, picking up right where he left off last season. Freshmen RF Philip Warner and 3B Brandon Washkevich each picked up two hits with C Adam Chong, LF McKenzie Maxwell and transfer SS Colin McKeen added a hit each. Veteran pitchers Justin Newbold, Andrew Ziedins, McKenzie Maxwell and Ian Filion all worked scoreless innings and freshman Zachary Danilewitz also looked strong with a scoreless inning of work.

This game wrapped up the fifth and final day of an extremely competitive training camp and the coaching staff selected the final 30 man roster, with five red shirts, that will make up the 2012 edition of the Golden Hawks.

"The coaching staff was thrilled at how competitive this training camp was," commented Head Coach Scott Ballantyne. "We had to release some very good ball players and that is never easy, but I am looking forward to this season and moving forward with the group of student-athletes that we have. We feel we have the pitching depth that is necessary to compete for a championship and if we can play good defence and continue to work on the fundamental aspects of the game, I think we'll score enough runs to be right in the mix with the top teams in the OUA."

The Golden Hawks will begin an exhibition schedule on Tuesday that will see them travel to St. Mary's to play two games against the Ontario Terriers U18 team and the University of Windsor Lancers at the beautiful ball park on the grounds of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. The week will culminate with the Golden Hawks travelling to St. Catharines on Labour Day weekend to defend their Championship at the Brock Invitational tournament.
