(Reuters) ? Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $9.5 million contract, Major League Baseball's website reported on Friday.
Garza, 28, had been seeking $12.5 million while the Cubs responded with an offer of $7.95 million.
The right-hander went 10-10 with a 3.32 earned run average last season, his first year with the Cubs where he earned $5.95 million.
Garza previously played with the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays and has a 52-54 career record after six seasons.
