UCSF Helen Cancer Center installs Accuray TomoTherapy system

University of California, San Francisco's (UCSF) Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center has installed Accuray's TomoTherapy system to provide treatment options for cancer patients.

The TomoTherapy system, designed for integrated, daily, 3D image-guided, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT), utilizes computed tomography (CT) imaging to identify the exact position of the tumor.

The system also enables clinicians to customize treatment for each patient, minimize radiation exposure to healthy tissue and critical structures and reduce side effects.

UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center radiation oncology chair Mack Roach said at UCSF, the center offers the advanced cancer treatment options available in order to provide accurate and individualized care for each patient.

"Having a dedicated system built from the ground up to deliver IMRT treatments is a valuable addition to our suite of cancer care technologies," Roach added.

In addition to TomoTherapy System, the center has installed Accuray's CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System, full brachytherapy program, a proton beam system and other stereotactic body radiation therapy and radiosurgery systems.

T-Mobile on Wednesday said that business users who consume more than their plan?s monthly allotment of HSPA+ data now have two options: They can either have their data throttled down to lower speeds and pay no overage fee, or they can pay overage fees in exchange for keeping their standard HSPA+ data speeds. The overage-fee plans start as low as $19.99 per month for 500MB of data with a $0.10-per-MB overage fee and go as high as $74.99 per month for 10GB of data with a $0.02-per-MB overage fee. The throttled data plans, meanwhile, start at $24.99 for 500MB of HSPA+ data and go as high as $77.99 for 10GB of HSPA+ data. Africa's savannas may become forests by 2100, study suggests

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A new study published today in Nature by authors from the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre and the Goethe University Frankfurt suggests that large parts of Africa?s savannas may well be forests by 2100. The study suggests that fertilization by atmospheric carbon dioxide is forcing increases in tree cover throughout Africa. A switch from savanna to forest occurs once a critical threshold of CO₂ concentration is exceeded, yet each site has its own critical threshold. The implication is that each savanna will switch at different points in time, thereby reducing the risk that a synchronous shock to the earth system will emanate from savannas.

Tropical grasslands, savannas and forests, areas the authors call the savanna complex, are expected to respond sensitively to climate and atmospheric changes. This is because the main players, grasses and trees, differ fundamentally in their response to temperature, carbon dioxide supply and fire and are in an unrelenting struggle for the dominance of the savanna complex. The outcome of this struggle determines whether vast portions of the globe?s tropical and sub-tropical regions are covered with grasslands, savannas or forests.? In the past such shifts in dominance have played out in slow motion, but the current wave of atmospheric changes has accelerated the potential rate of change.?

Experimental studies have generally shown that plants do not show a large response to CO₂ fertilization. ??However, most of these studies were conducted in northern ecosystems or on commercially important species? explains Steven Higgins, lead author of the study from the Biodiodversity and Climate Reseach Centre and Goethe-University. ?In fact, only one experimental study has investigated how savanna plants will respond to changing CO₂ concentrations and this study showed that savanna trees were essentially CO₂ starved under pre-industrial CO₂ concentrations, and that their growth really starts taking off at the CO₂ concentrations we are currently experiencing.?

The vegetation shifts that the Higgins and Scheiter study projects are an example of what some theorists call catastrophic regime shifts. Such catastrophic regime shifts can be triggered by small changes in the factors that regulate the system. These small changes set up a cascade of events that reinforce each other causing the system to change more and more rapidly. The study demonstrated that the savanna complex showed symptoms of catastrophic regime shifts. ??The potential for regime shifts in a vegetation formation that covers such vast areas is what is making earth system scientists turn their attention to savannas? comments Higgins.?

Knowing when such regime shifts will occur is critical for anticipating change. This study discovered that locations where the temperature rise associated with climate change occurs rapidly, for example in the center of southern Africa, are projected to switch later to forest as the high rate of temperature increase allows the savanna grasses to remain competitive for longer in the face of rising atmospheric CO₂ concentration. This means that even though a single location may experience its catastrophic regime shift, the vegetation change when averaged over a region will be smoother. Such gradual transitions in regional vegetation patterns will reduce the potential for shocks to the earth system. ?While this may seem reassuring, we have to bear in mind that these changes are still rapid when viewed on geological time scales?, says Higgins.

The practical implications of the study are far reaching. For example, the study identified a belt that spans northern central Africa where fire suppression would encourage savannas to transition to forests. ?So if you wanted to sequester carbon as part of a carbon mitigation action, this is where you should do it? explained Higgins ?with the caveat that where this will work is shifting as atmospheric conditions change.? A worrying implication is that the grasslands and open savannas of Africa, areas with unique floras and faunas, are set to be replaced by closed savannas? or forests.? Hence it appears that atmospheric change represents a major threat to systems that are already threatened by over-grazing, plantation forestry and crop production.

Howard W. "Hoddy" Hanna III wears a shiny green button on his suit coat that makes a simple promise: "If you list it, we will sell it."

Hanna and a number of other area real estate agents are feeling pretty confident in that message these days.

Through June 12, the number of homes sold by the Greater Erie Board of Realtors was up more than 4 percent from the previous year, while the average price of those homes was up nearly 8 percent.

Numbers for the first three months of the year were even more dramatic.

Through the end of March, home prices in Erie County were up 16.6 percent, the third largest jump of any major market in the United States, according to a report in Real Estate Broker's Insider.

To a lesser degree, there's mounting evidence that the U.S. real estate market as a whole is improving.

A report Tuesday from the Standard & Poor's Case-Shiller home price index shows that housing prices improved during April in 19 of our 20 largest cities.

And a measure of national prices rose 1.3 percent in April from March, the first increase in seven months.

Hanna can easily explain the improvements in Cape Coral, Fla., and Grand Rapids, Mich., the two markets that top the list of most improved. Both, he said, were hit hard during the recession and are showing signs of bouncing back.

Erie was different. The area's steady-as-she-goes real estate market saw only modest declines, during even the darkest days of the most recent recession.

Now, both statistical and anecdotal evidence suggest that the usually plodding real estate market is riding a wave.

Some of the reasons are simple, Hanna said.

"What is going on is supply and demand," he said. "We are in a rising market. There is pent-up demand."

Toby Froehlich, owner of Coldwell Banker Select Realtors in Erie, said the numbers don't entirely surprise him.

"We didn't get hit as hard with the foreclosure issues," he said. "Two, the local economy is stronger than anyone wants to admit. You have jobs, you have record-low interest rates. It was a lot of things going on for us."

A growing number of competitive bidding situations is more evidence of a stronger real estate market.

Hanna said his agents are making frequent use of a new program that allows prospective buyers to automatically submit a second bid if their first offer is met or surpassed.

Strong sales figures could be substantially better if it were not for one shortcoming, said John Peluso, senior vice president and regional market manager for Howard Hanna.

There aren't enough houses to sell, particularly in the middle price range of $125,000 to $250,000, he said.

"We could probably be doing twice as much business if we had the houses," he said.

Hanna said the inventory of houses for sale is at its lowest point since 2004.

Froehlich said local Realtors have about 1,350 single-family homes listed at the moment, about 150 fewer than he considers ideal.

Froehlich and Hanna see another soft spot in the local real estate market. Fans of new construction don't have many options, they said.

"Construction is very weak," Froehlich said. "There are very few builders who can get financing and very few developers who can get financing."

Mortgage financing is available at historically low interest rates, Hanna said. But securing a loan can take time.

"There are a lot of hoops we have to jump through," he said.

Hanna said evidence suggests that more people are deciding homeownership is worth jumping through those hoops.

After falling into the low 60 percent range during the recession, those numbers and interest in buying a home are bouncing back, he said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York Yankees starter Andy Pettitte broke his left fibula where it meets his ankle and is expected to miss at least six weeks after he was hit by a batted ball during Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

The Yankees say they expect the break to heal without surgery. The injury came on the same day the Yankees placed left-hander CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin.

Right-hander Adam Warren is set to be called up from Triple-A on Thursday to make the Friday start that Sabathia was scheduled for. Freddy Garcia is slated to go Monday in Pettitte's spot, and the Yankees are getting David Phelps to pitch deeper into games in the minors with an eye toward bringing him back to the big club as a starter.

General manager Brian Cashman said he didn't want to make a trade to replace Pettitte in the rotation. Garcia has improved his velocity and command recently, and has been an effective starter most of his career. That includes a start in a playoff game he made for New York last season.

"Phelps is a guy, who, if he were stretched out, would be our prime candidate," Cashman said. "We'll just have to figure it out. I would prefer not to go outside."

On the play, Casey Kotchman's low line drive hit Pettitte near his left ankle, the one the left-hander pushes off with. Pettitte took a step toward the ball near the third base line before gently dropping to the infield grass.

Pettitte tried to stay in the game, but manager Joe Girardi removed him when he came up limping after throwing one live pitch. "I've been hit in the shin, in that area, so many times and I've never had to come out of a game," Pettitte said. "As soon as I threw that first pitch, I had an awful lot of pain, all the way down to my foot."

Pettitte (3-3) retired after the 2010 postseason but returned to the Yankees this spring to shore up New York's pitching rotation, which at the time had already lost Michael Pineda at the time to shoulder surgery.

Pettitte, who has a 243-141 career record, is in his 14th season with New York. He also spent three years with Houston. On both clubs, he was a teammate of Roger Clemens, and he testified at Clemens' recent perjury trial.

With Pettitte out, Derek Jeter is now the only Yankee on the field from the club's Core Four of players who won four World Series titles from 1996-2000. Mariano Rivera is out with a season-ending knee injury and Jorge Posada retired.

"No one's going to feel sorry for us," Girardi said. "Guys have to step up."

Mississippi's sole abortion clinic sues over new law

TUPELO, Mississippi (Reuters) - The lone abortion facility in Mississippi asked a federal court on Wednesday to block a new state law that will require doctors who perform the controversial procedure to have admitting privileges at a local hospital.

The law, set to take effect on Sunday, threatens to make Mississippi the only U.S. state without an abortion clinic. Some anti-abortion state lawmakers say they hope that would mean an end to abortions there.

The state's sole clinic, Jackson Women's Health Organization, says the new measure is unconstitutional because it aims to effectively ban abortions in Mississippi.

The clinic is also seeking immediate relief from the court to be given more time to try to comply with the law, according to the lawsuit filed on its behalf by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights.

Clinic representatives said they began applying for the necessary privileges after Mississippi's Republican Governor Phil Bryant signed the measure into law in mid-April. But they have struggled to obtain them at any of the half-dozen hospitals within a 30-minute drive of the clinic, located in Jackson, the state capital.

"We have been attempting to comply with the law, but we just have not had adequate time for the privileges to come through, if they come through," clinic owner Diane Derzis told Reuters. "We've not been turned down outright, except on a few hospitals that had religious beliefs that didn't coincide."

The state legislator who sponsored the law said he was not surprised by the legal challenge, and he felt confident it would withstand the court test.

"It's been over 70 days since Gov. Bryant signed this legislation," Republican Representative Sam Mims said. "For them to say we don't have time, I just don't buy that argument."

Mississippi already has some of the country's strictest abortion laws and one of the lowest abortion rates. It also has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the United States - more than 60 percent above the national average in 2010.

The state became a battleground for reproductive rights last fall when voters weighed in on a constitutional "personhood" amendment that defined life as starting at the moment eggs are fertilized. Voters handed abortion opponents a setback by rejecting the proposed amendment.

Undeterred, state lawmakers this spring passed legislation requiring abortion providers to be board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and to have staff with admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

Thirty-nine other states also require that OB-GYNs perform abortions, and nine others mandate hospital privileges, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sexual and reproductive rights.

But Mississippi, which had as many as 14 abortion providers in the early 1980s, would be the first state without a single abortion clinic should the Jackson Women's Health Organization close, Guttmacher spokeswoman Rebecca Wind said.

UPCOMING INSPECTION

Inspectors from the Mississippi Department of Health, which is the state's licensing agency for abortion clinics, still are planning to check on the clinic's compliance with the law on Monday, agency spokeswoman Liz Sharlot said.

She declined to comment on Wednesday about the new lawsuit.

The clinic's main three doctors, who all travel from outside of Mississippi to see patients, are already board-certified OB-GYNs.

If the facility has not complied with the requirement for admitting privileges by the inspection, it will get 10 working days to submit a plan outlining how it will remedy the situation within a reasonable time frame, Sharlot said.

Sharlot said the definition of "reasonable" varies from case to case, leaving some uncertainty about how soon the clinic might be forced to close if it cannot comply. Sharlot noted that the abortion clinic has been aware of the law for months.

Mims had asked the department to deny Jackson Women's Health Organization a grace period. He said he did not "want to give the facility 10 extra days to perform abortions" and was consulting attorneys on the legality of such a move.

Mims said the law was intended to protect patients by ensuring that physicians are certified and able to follow them into a local hospital in emergency cases, but added if it also "causes Mississippi to have fewer abortions, then that is a positive result."

The Jackson Women's Health Organization has been providing services in Mississippi since 1996. Clinic spokeswoman Betty Thompson said about 2,000 women received abortions at the clinic between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. The staff also provides state-mandated counseling services to clients, some of whom ultimately chose to keep their babies, she said.

The nearest clinics outside the state are located in Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana. But Thompson said not all women will be able to access those facilities.

"It puts an undue burden on women of all classes and colors, Thompson said. "I see us going back to the early '70s and what happened to women who did not have access. They tried to induce it for themselves or they went to people who were not qualified to do the procedures, and they sometimes died."

Mims disputed that the measure could lead to such a scenario.

"I'm not at all worried," he said. "My hope is that the women that are making these choices will now choose life, that they will realize that life begins at conception."

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Sen. Orrin Hatch won the GOP primary in Utah on Tuesday, handily turning back a challenge from tea party forces hoping to jolt the Republican Party again by defeating an incumbent who occasionally strayed from the movement's focus on shrinking the federal government.

Until this summer, Hatch, 78, had not faced a primary challenge since winning office in 1976. Former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist, who survived a 2008 plane crash in Guatemala that killed 11 of 14 on board, won just enough support at the state GOP's nominating convention to advance to the primary.

But Liljenquist faced an overwhelming financial and organizational disadvantage. Hatch, learning from the defeat two years ago of his Senate colleague Robert Bennett, spent about $10 million blanketing the airwaves and building a campaign operation unlike anything Utah had seen before.

Hatch's race was the premier event in Tuesday's primaries. In New York, 82-year-old Rep. Charlie Rangel won the Democratic primary in spite of a House censure 18 months ago for failing to pay all his taxes and for filing misleading financial disclosure statements.

In Oklahoma, Rep. John Sullivan was in a close contest against political newcomer Jim Bridenstine, who ran to Sullivan's right and criticized the incumbent for missing hundreds of House votes in the past decade.

A few months ago, Hatch was considered vulnerable like Bennett and six-term Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, who lost in last month's Indiana GOP primary. But Hatch got a huge endorsement from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who said he would need Hatch in the Senate if he wins the presidency.

Romney easily won his final presidential primary Tuesday as GOP voters in Utah relished the chance to show their support for the Brigham Young University graduate.

Hatch seemed to have an answer to every criticism in his quest for a seventh term. For those who said that 36 years in office was enough, he said that he wouldn't be running again if it weren't for the opportunity to serve as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee if the GOP wins control of the Senate. He also announced it would be his last term.

For those who said he wasn't conservative enough, he gravitated to the right with his comments and his votes, scoring a 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union in 2010 and 2011. His lifetime rating of 89 percent from the ACU would place Hatch among the Senate's most conservative lawmakers, but Hatch at times took stands that didn't sit well with the right. He worked with the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy to establish a health insurance program for poor and moderate-income children. He also voted to establish a prescription drug benefit under Medicare and to rescue financial firms facing bankruptcy without government help.

Liljenquist, 37, a relative newcomer to the Utah political scene, seized on voters' concerns about the growing national debt and tried to make the case that Hatch had been a major contributor to that debt.

Hatch was widely viewed as most vulnerable when about 4,000 GOP stalwarts gathered at the state's nominating convention in April. Delegates at the convention tend to be more conservative than the GOP electorate, and the Hatch campaign team spent months trying to generate a new crop of delegates. That work paid off, with the large majority of delegates being new to the process. In the end, Hatch won 59.2 percent of the delegates, just shy of the 60 percent he needed to avoid a runoff with Liljenquist.

The Hatch campaign included many of the state's top political consultants and strategists. It also hired some of the tea party activists who had helped generate Sen. Mike Lee's victory two years ago.

With the primary victory, Hatch was a huge favorite to win the general election in November against Democratic candidate Scott Howell.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Outfielder Marlon Byrd was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball on Monday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Major League Baseball said the 34-year-old Byrd tested positive for Tamoxifen, which can reduce side effects of steroid use and increase testosterone. It is often used to treat breast cancer patients.

"I made an inexcusable mistake," Byrd said in a statement released by the players' association. "Several years ago, I had surgery for a condition that was private and unrelated to baseball. Last winter, I suffered a recurrence of that condition and I was provided with a medication that resulted in my positive test. Although that medication is on the banned list, I absolutely did not use it for performance enhancement reasons."

Byrd is currently a free agent, and will be placed on the restricted list for the duration of his suspension, which began immediately. He started the season with the Cubs and was dealt to the Red Sox on April 21. He was designated for assignment by Boston on June 9 and released four days later.

"I am mortified by my carelessness and I apologize to everyone who loves this game as I do," Byrd said. "I will serve my suspension, continue to work hard and hope that I am given an opportunity to help a Club win later this season."

In 2009, Byrd said he was using supplements provided by SNAC System, a company founded by Victor Conte, who also was the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative.

BALCO was at the center of a wide-ranging scandal involving performance-enhancing drugs that enveloped several top-level athletes, including Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery and Barry Bonds. Conte pleaded guilty to steroid distribution in July 2005 and served four months in jail.

Byrd said the supplements were all OK to use under MLB rules. He had never before been suspended for failing an PED test.

"Any nutritional supplements I ever provided to Marlon Byrd were legal products that contained no banned substances," Conte wrote on Twitter. "I provided Marlon Byrd with nutritional and training advice which had nothing whatsoever to do with any type of prohibited substances."

In an email to The Associated Press, Conte said he still supports Byrd.

"Marlon Byrd is a terrific person and did not use a drug to cheat," Conte said in his email. "Look at his numbers this season, the worst of his career. Traded and then cut. I was not aware of his medical condition. Marlon is my friend and I will always have his back."

Byrd hit .210 in 47 games with the two teams, though he hit .270 with a homer and seven RBIs in 34 games with Boston. The Red Sox picked him up when they had a shortage in the outfield after a rash of injuries.

"He played here and he played well," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "I had no indication or I don't think anyone did."

The 34-year-old Byrd has played for five teams in 11 major league seasons and is a career .278 hitter.

Byrd finished fourth in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2003 with the Phillies and was a National League All-Star with the Cubs in 2010.
